## What is Carbon Accounting?

### Identify emissions

The problem of climate change is a significant one, and although some planet-friendly practices are commonplace, it can often feel as though we've left the oven on. By accurately measuring each business activity and the associated greenhouse gasses (GHG), we attain an exact snapshot of the scale we're dealing with and how these emissions are being created.

### Commit to reduction

Knowing your carbon footprint is a great start, but the growing climate crisis requires us to act on that information. CarbonTrail regards every business transaction as one that can make a change - quantifying your contribution to solving this issue and giving you the ability to analyse the progress you're making as a business.

## What is industry standard?

Carbon is Carbon no matter where you are in the world, but what meaningful reduction looks like differs. In New Zealand we have a goal to be at Net Zero (via offsetting or decreasing emissions) by 2050 under the [Climate Change Response Act](https://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2002/0040/latest/DLM158584.html).

Given the goals in this Act are time sensitive, there are phased budgets, the first of which (2022-2036) has a corresponding action plan: [Emissions Reduction Plan,](https://environment.govt.nz/publications/aotearoa-new-zealands-first-emissions-reduction-plan/) administered by the Ministry for the Environment; and the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol defines the global framework for measuring.

CarbonTrail provides and utilizes over 200 emissions factors in its calculations and gives you the ability to add contextual accuracy through categorisation. 

We work with partners to help you offset unavoidable emissions or proceed to certify your emissions profile in line with the relevant ISO and GHG standards.

### You choose

If you're new to carbon accounting, building for B-Corp status or looking to maintain certification, actively managing emissions offers the most accurate and integrated practice. With all transactions accounted for business-wide carbon management and reduction becomes possible. Include suppliers or franchisees for Scope 3 emissions and track your carbon reducing efforts across your supply chain. 

### ...but it's not the usual suspects.

This isn't an IT project - most of our customers are up and running before lunch. There is also no requirement to hire an additional Carbon Accounting or emissions expert to sign-off on your efforts. Your data is transparent and effectively and accurately attributed to your footprint and impact.
